Norton 360

Norton 360 provides all-in-one protection that keeps you, your family, your PC, and your information secure. Norton 360 requires 300MB of hard drive space, considerably less than Windows Live OneCare, but about double that of McAfee Total Protection. Norton 360 includes antivirus, antispyware, antiphishing, antirootkit protection, a firewall, Symantec's new SONAR (Symantec Online Network for Advance Response) behavioral monitoring software, and a vulnerability assessment tool to see what Windows updates your computer might be missing. Norton 360 also includes tools to defragment your hard drive and clean up temporary files and other clutter than could slow your PC down. Norton 360 does include a backup and recovery tool, and provides up to 2GB of free online storage.

Security

Security as a service is the latest trend to trickle down from the enterprise sector into the affordable realm of the home consumer. Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server. This comprehensive solution combines Symantec's proven, industry-leading security and PC tune-up technologies with new automated backup and antiphishing features, providing a full circle of protection. Red Herring: Security Firms Battle Microsoft"Security giants Symantec and McAfee vowed Thursday to release new products over the summer to take on rival Microsoft s first consumer security product, Windows Live OneCare, in a move that will turn security into one of the most hotly contested technology markets.

Software

Norton 360 includes antivirus, antispyware, antiphishing, antirootkit protection, a firewall, Symantec's new SONAR (Symantec Online Network for Advance Response) behavioral monitoring software, and a vulnerability assessment tool to see what Windows updates your computer might be missing. With Norton 360, Symantec says it is attempting to tackle the information overload of much of the consumer security software available today. Norton 360 is designed with a hands off approach for its users, with the emphasis on the software ADVERTISEMENT doing the right thing automatically rather than bothering the user with endless decisions they might not be sure of making. New features of the software include a far smaller resource footprint, using just two processes consuming around 7MB of memory in total. He said that Sonar is a vital part of any security software, as virus writers quickly write new variants of malicious code in order to stay ahead of the signature databases of the likes of Symantec, McAfee and others.

Antivirus

FeaturesRather than simply bundle all of the features from Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security, Norton SystemWorks, and Norton Confidential, Symantec went back to the drawing board and designed Norton 360 from the ground up. Symantec, the world's largest PC antivirus maker, on Monday unleashed Norton 360, the company's latest salvo in the battle for consumer security dollars. Following Microsoft's lead, all of the latest security products combine basic antivirus, antispyware and firewall technologies with backup features and several tune-up tools for Windows PCs--features Symantec and McAfee traditionally charged extra for. The bulk of the package is housed within 'PC Security', which includes a firewall, antivirus and additional tools such as e-mail scanning and intrusion prevention. Includes:# Antivirus# Antispyware# Antiphishing# Online identity protection# Web site authentication# Two Way Firewall# 2GB secure online storageKey Features:# PC security defends you against a broad range of threats# Transaction security safeguards you against online identity theft# Automatic backup and restore protects your important files from loss# PC tuneup keeps your PC running at peak performance# Embedded support components diagnose problems and help you quickly resolve common issues# Includes free support via email and live chat# Includes 2GB of online storage for photos, music, contacts, & financial documents (option to purchase additional storage)# Includes protection updates and new product features as available throughout the renewable service period*.

Those who are a bit more advanced may find Norton 360 comes up shorter still. The weakest part of the suite of tools is the backup—you don't have as much fine control with Norton 360 as other back-up programs, but you also don't need to be an Einstein to restore your files in the event of a crash. When I first load my email program each morning there is a noticeable delay while Norton 360 scans the incoming messages. I switched to Norton 360 because—despite the fact that I had antivirus software installed—I was becoming skittish about the amount of time I spent browsing the web. Since we spend so much time looking at new products for the first time, I figured it might be a productive change for me to talk about Norton 360, a computer security product I've been using for the last two months.
